Day Trip to Assisi + Wine Tasting

  • 290 reviews | 2,904 travellers
We did everything on the itinerary. The driver was attentive and patient. The vehicle was in excellent condition. When we arrived in Assisi, we had a guide who showed us everything. I think we could have spent a little more time at the Basilica of St. Francis. During the trip, we had time to buy souvenirs.

Set off on a day trip from Rome across the Italian countryside to discover the birthplace of St Francis in the charming town of Assisi.

Tour Description

After picking you up from your hotel at the indicated time, we'll leave the capital behind and start to skirt the shores of Lake Trasimeno and head north towards the Umbria region. Are you ready to explore one of Italy's most famous pilgrimage sites?

On the way, we'll stop for a coffee at the foot of Spoleto. Upon arrival in Assisi, we'll take a guided tour to discover all the secrets of the birthplace of St. Francis. We'll start with a half hour visit to the Basilica of St. Francis, which houses the tomb of the saint, frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century and masterpieces by artists such as Cimabue, Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti and Simone Martini.

Next, we'll go to the Town Hall Square where we'll admire the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Capitolo del Popolo, the Torre Civica and the so-called Temple of Minerva, the most preserved Roman building in the whole region, built between 40 and 30 BC. The tour will continue with a visit to the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first patron saint of the Internet, in the Santuario della Spogliazione.

During the trip, we'll have a guided visit of almost 2 hours to a typical wine cellar to taste 4 glasses of Umbrian wines. We'll accompany the tasting with bruschettas with extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, porchetta and various cured meats.

Leaving Assisi, we'll make a brief stop at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built to protect the Porziuncola, the small chapel that housed the first community of Franciscans and the Chapel of the Transitus, where St. Francis died in 1226.

The tour will end in Piazza della Reppubblica, in the centre of Rome, about 12 hours after pickup.

Pickup Option

The day trip includes hotel pickup in central Rome. If you’re staying in an apartment or a Bed&Breakfast, you should go directly to the meeting point in Piazza della Repubblica, in front of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, at 8 am. Please be on time so as not to delay the group.

Private Excursion

If you wish, you can also book a Rome private day trip.
