This catacombs tour takes you outside of Rome during a half-day trip, heading to the Basilica of Saint Sebastian and its Catacombs. Then walk down the magnificent Appian Way, one of the most important Roman roads, and possibly the oldest artery that still exists.
Rome Catacombs Tour & Appian Way
Greet your guide near the San Giovanni Metro Station in Piazzale Appio at the indicated time climb on board an air-conditioned coach and depart with a small group to the Basilica of St Sebastian.
Once inside the basilica, we'll have the opportunity to admire Lorenzo Bernini's final sculpture, the Salvator Mundi. Afterward, we'll continue along the Ancient Appian Way, often regarded as the first "highway" in history.
As we travel along the Appian Way, we’ll see notable Roman highlights, including the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. We'll then pause to explore the Villa of Maxentius complex, featuring the Mausoleum of Romulus and the Circus of Maxentius.
The highlight of our tour will be a visit to the catacombs, providing a unique perspective on Rome's history. On Wednesdays, we'll explore the Catacombs of St. Sebastian, while on other days, we'll visit the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. Please note that these visits are subject to availability, and occasionally we may visit the Catacombs of St. Domitilla.
Following this final visit, we'll hop back on the bus and make our way back to Rome, arriving 3.5 hours later.
Important Information
- On Mondays the Villa of Maxentius is closed, instead we'll admire it from its exterior.
