Capitoline Museum Guided Tour
Capitoline Museum Tour
Find your way to Piazza del Campidoglio, from where your tour will start accompanied by an English-speaking art historian guide. This impressive square was designed by Michelangelo during the sixteenth century and the image of the piazza is currently used on the Italian 50 cent coins.
The square houses the striking town hall and the Capitoline Museums, the oldest archaeological museum in the world. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you through the Museum’s main rooms and point out the most famous art work including the bronze she-wolf that nurses Romulus and Remus, or the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, sculpted in the second century A.D.
After visiting the Museum, you’ll take a walking-tour around Piazza Venezia. On one side of the square is the Altare della Patria, dedicated to the first king of Italy. The impressive Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II is nicknamed “cream cake” by the Italians, since its bright white façade looks a bit like a cake.
Next, stroll down Via dei Fori Imperiali, flanked on both sides by important Antiquity landmarks, like the Basilica of Maxentius, the Market, Trajan’s Column and the Forum of Nerva, just to name a few.
You’ll come across the Colosseum, also known as the Amphitheatre Flavium, and admire its striking façade and then continue to the Arch of Constantine. The tour will come to an end by the Arch.
