Hiking Tour in Polylepis Forest
Hiking Tour in Polylepis Forest
Between 7 and 8 am we'll pick you up at your hotel in Riobamba and set out for the Polylepis forest. We'll stop at the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve to start the hiking route.
During the 6-mile (10 km) trek, we'll enter paths full of centennial Polylepis trees and other varieties of endemic flora. Did you know that the Polylepis genus comprises a total of 28 native shrub and tree species? We'll try to see them all!
Throughout the trek we'll encounter alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, and, if we're very lucky, some Andean condors flying over our heads. As we walk, we'll talk about the importance of grazing for the survival of the camelids of Chimborazo.
After finishing the trekking route, we'll get back into the vehicle to head to Chorrera Canyon, an imposing volcanic gorge that still harbors remains of lapilli. We'll then travel back to Riobamba to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch consisting of roasted pork accompanied by potatoes or mote (hominy) and chiriucho (a sour vegetable sauce) and served with a refreshing natural juice.
With renewed energy, we'll visit the city's train station and the nearby artisan plaza. We'll then head back to your hotel to conclude the tour, arriving between 2 and 3 pm.
