El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike
Day 1: Riobamba - El Altar Volcano
At 7 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and travel to the base of the El Altar Volcano, which is located at an altitude of 22,965 feet (7,000 metres). When we get there, we'll give you a packed lunch for the hike and prepare our equipment for the 9-mile (15-kilometre) route that awaits us through the Sangay National Park. During our ascent, we'll see laurels, royal palms, achupallas, ferns and orchids.
After 7 hours of walking, we'll get to the place where we'll set up our tents for the night. At the end of the day, we'll have a filling dinner under the Ecuadorian Andes' starry night sky.
Day 2: El Altar Volcano - Riobamba
Rise and shine! As a new day dawns at the foot of the mountain, we'll have a tasty breakfast to get fuelled up for the day. Before setting off for the summit, we'll give you a bag of food for the route.
Once we've worked our way across 1 mile (2 kilometres) of rocky trails, we'll come to the El Altar Volcano's 13,451-foot (4,100-metre) high sumit. From inside the crater, we'll see the Yellow Lagoon, which was formed after the volcano's most recent eruption in the 15th century. Afterwards, we'll drive back to the base and board the minibus to return to Riobamba. Our arrival at your hotel is scheduled for 4 pm.
