Ria Lagartos Mangroves Boat Ride
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Rio Lagartos boardwalk to embark on an exciting boat ride through the mangroves.
We'll enter the mangroves located in the estuary of the Ria Lagartos. This natural area on the northern coast of the Yucatan, declared a Biosphere Reserve, is home to more than 1,450 plant species. As we go, we'll learn to differentiate the main botanical characteristics that distinguish each species.
The Ria Lagartos reserve is also known for its great diversity of water birds. During the trip, we'll be able to see different types of cranes, pelicans, and hawks, among others. In addition, if conditions are favourable, we may even see the famous American flamingos.
We'll continue our cruise through the mangroves as we learn more about other aspects of this fascinating ecosystem. We'll sail around the coastline of the Rio Lagartos beach and take in the beautiful views in this area.
After a 2.5-hour cruise through the mangroves of the Ria Lagartos estuary, we'll conclude our boat ride at the starting point.
Operating hours
The tour will take place between 7 am and 10 am since this is when the birds of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve are most likely to be seen. However, we'll get in touch with you to confirm our exact departure time prior to the day of the activity.
Birdwatching
The Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of the best places in the Yucatan Peninsula to see flamingos and other birds. However, these animals are wild and, thus, unpredictable. The sighting of a greater or lesser number of birds will depend on various factors, such as the weather at the time or the breeding seasons of the different species.
