Birdwatching in Rio Lagartos
Birdwatching in Rio Lagartos
We'll meet at the indicated time at the Río Lagartos boardwalk, where we'll board a boat and begin to navigate through the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
This protected area of great ornithological richness is one of the environmental treasures of the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. During the trip, we'll see the famous flamingos of Rio Lagartos. Do you know why they have such a particular pinkish color? Find out on the tour!
As we sail, we'll also be able to see other birds native to the Yucatan, such as pelicans, herons, and large American eagles. We might also see crocodiles swimming through the mangroves!
Finally, we'll head to the beach of Río Lagartos to observe its emerald-green waters. After a 1.5-hour trip, we'll conclude the tour back at the departure pier.
Hours
The tour will take place between 7 am and 10 am, since this is when the birds of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve are most visible. We'll let you know the exact time of departure well in advance.
Birdwatching
The Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of the best places in the Yucatan Peninsula to see flamingos and other birds. However, the animals are unpredictable. The sighting of a greater or lesser number of specimens will depend on various factors such as the weather at the time or the reproduction and breeding seasons of the different species.
