On this free tour of the Lapa neighbourhood, we'll explore the most bohemian part of Rio de Janeiro. We'll wander down streets filled with art, culture, and tradition and you'll even get to see the colourful Escadaria Selarón!

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll begin this free walking tour of the Lapa neighbourhood in front of the Municipal Theatre, located in the iconic Cinelândia Square, Rio's cultural epicentre back in the 1940s. Did you know that it's known as "Rio's Broadway"?

Here, we'll begin our journey into the city's past, admiring historical buildings like the Odeon Cinema, the Rival Theatre, and the Palacio Cinema. We'll also swing by the famous Bar Amarelinho, an emblematic spot for locals for over a century.

Moving away from Cinelândia, we'll then make our way along a historical pavement that will lead us to South America's first public park. This path will take us straight to Lapa, a neighbourhood where culture flows from every nook and cranny.

Once we reach Lapa, we'll have a brief pause to take in the Escadaria Selarón, an artwork created by the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. Known locally as the Lapa Steps, each of its 215 stairs is decorated with mosaic tiles from all across the world. We'll then continue towards the Arcos de Lapa, an imposing aqueduct from the colonial era that has become one of Rio de Janeiro's main landmarks.

We'll also visit the altar built in honour of Zé Pilintra, an Afro-Brazilian mythical figure who symbolises nightlife, earthly pleasures, and cultural resistance. Our next stop will be the Flying Circus and the Progress Foundation, two key spots for Rio's music scene and contemporary art. We'll also see the headquarters of the Bola Preta Carnival Club.

Our tour will culminate at Praça Tiradentes, home to the João Caetano Theatre, one of the oldest buildings in Rio and a landmark for Brazillian theatre culture. We'll end by visiting Casa Cavé, the city's oldest pastry shop, where you'll have the chance to try a tasty brigadeiro, a traditional Brazillian treat.

After a total of 2 hours, this free tour of Lapa will come to an end.
