Rio Afro Culture + Samba in Pedra do Sal Free Tour

Geography says the Atlantic Ocean separates Africa from Brazil. However, the music, architecture, and art of Rio all suggest the opposite. We'll meet in front of the Rio Art Museum at 4 pm to start our amazing free tour of the city's African cultural heritage.

First, we'll discover the Praça Máua square, where you'll encounter the elegant avant-garde architecture of the Museum of Tomorrow. This state-of-the-art building, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, points to the future of the city, whilst maintaining its African roots, which is essential to understanding the history of Rio.

Next, we'll continue the tour passing through the Largo de São Francisco da Prainha square in the direction of Pedra do Sal. This is a district of the Saúde neighborhood that housed an ancient quilombo village, that is, of African origin. As we'll see, this area of the city has numerous urban graffiti reminiscent of this past, and there is no shortage of carnival rhythms in this district either!

We'll continue to the Gamboa neighborhood and the iconic Morro da Conceição. Rio's African origins are also very palpable at the Valongo Pier, where we'll see a monument declared a World Heritage Site due to it's unique remnants of the arrival of African slaves in America and historical and spiritual importance.

Monday is samba day in Rio. The oldest popular samba circle in the world takes place in the streets of Pedra do Sal, so you'll be in the right place at the right time to live this unique cultural experience. As we head to this place, we'll learn some facts that relate the African roots of the city with the popular Carnival of Rio de Janeiro.

At 5:30 pm, we'll end this free tour at the Hanging Garden of Valongo, where you'll be able to enjoy the best samba of your life!
