Free Walking Tour of Communist Riga
Free Walking Tour of Communist Riga
At 2:30 pm, we'll meet by the Laima Clock, one of the city's most iconic landmarks, to start this free walking tour of Communist Riga.
During the tour, we'll reveal some of the most significant moments in Riga's communist past while looking at some of the most important heritage buildings built at the time. We'll talk about the strong Soviet influence in the area while admiring iconic landmarks such as the Freedom Monument, the Congress Hall, the Nativity of Christ Cathedral, the former US Embassy, and The Corner House, the former KGB headquarters in Latvia.
What's more, we'll learn about Soviet occupation of the country, and of Riga in particular, as we review the history of those who lived through it. We'll hear how the local population managed to live under the control of the KGB, the Committee for State Security of the Soviet Union.
After a two-hour review of this period in Latvia's history, we'll arrive at The Corner House, where our free walking tour of Communist Riga will come to an end.
