At the appointed time we'll meet at the Plaza Constitución 1812, the perfect place to start this free tour of Redondela. Did you know that it's the main stop of the Portuguese Way of St. James? Get ready to discover all its charms!
We'll start by walking through the network of streets and squares of the old town and we'll talk about the medieval architecture of Redondela. We'll also take a look at the wall, of which only a few parts remain around the Church of Santiago.
Then we'll visit the seafaring neighborhood outside the walls, developed from the small port and the Jacobean Route, the origin of which we'll learn about on the tour. We'll also tell you all kinds of curiosities, including, for example, why the inhabitants of this town are popularly known as choqueiros, who Xan Carallás was, and why the town is known as the Town of the Viaducts.
We'll continue the tour by going over the mythical Battle of Rande and discuss illustrious characters such as Captain Nemo, who sailed through its waters with the Nautilus, Pedro Madruga as well as the Irish nobleman John O'Dogherty. You'll learn all kinds of things!
The tour will also take us to see how throughout the 20th century Redondela went from being a fishing village to an industrial town, all thanks to the development of the textile and fishing industries.
