Almagruz Caves Guided Tour
Almagruz Caves Guided Tour
At the time of your choice, we'll meet at the car park of the interpretation centre of the Almagruz Troglodyte Habitat Complex. We're in one of the most special places in the Geopark of Granada, characterised by numerous caves, both from prehistoric and contemporary times. We'll travel back in time!
We'll begin our visit by learning about the great archaeological site of the Guadix-Baza basin. Fossils of ancient European hominids have been found in these areas, so the existence of the troglodyte settlement in the Almagruz caves is not surprising.
We'll discover how our ancestors lived and what medieval alterations were carried out in the caves excavated in the cliffs.
In addition, we'll enter a farmhouse cave, the so-called Cortijo Viejo Almagruz. We'll walk through the different rooms of this 16th-century construction, as we see the kitchen, the bedrooms, the courtyard and other spaces perfectly adapted to the structure of the cave.
As we visit other caves in Almagruz we'll learn about rural life and learn many interesting facts about the local culture. We'll talk about the production of cheese, we'll discover traditions such as the "matanzas" and we'll talk about the different artistic techniques used to work with esparto grass, wool, silk or clay.
After an hour and 15 minutes of guided tour of the Almagruz caves, we'll end the tour at the starting point.
