Free Walking Tour of Pune

We'll meet at the main gate of Shaniwar Wada fort, before starting our free guided tour of Pune, one of the oldest cities in India. Whilst admiring the majestic façade of this fortress, you'll hear all about the city's origins and the most important historical events that took place here. Did you know that more than a thousand people lived inside the fort during the Peshwa dynasty?

The tour will continue at Lal Mahal, the birthplace and childhood home of the founder of the powerful Maratha Empire which governed the Indian subcontinent for almost two centuries. From here, we then head to the centre of Pune to browse the local markets, such as the Tulshi Baug Market. Here, you'll find all types of magical local products, from food to handicrafts.

Along the route, you'll encounter ancient buildings, harbouring secrets that will all be revealed on this tour. We'll also visit the Dagdusheth Halwai temple famous for its statue of the goddess Ganesha.

After learning about the origin of this deity with the body of a woman and the head of an elephant, we'll take you to other Hindu temples in Pune, like Tulsi Baug Ganpati and Tulshibaug Shri Ram Mandir. Before bringing this free tour to an end, we'll visit Mahatma Phule Mandai, the biggest vegetable market in the city, where we'll see how the locals go about their day-to-day lives.

Finally, we'll say our goodbyes next to the Vishrambaug Wada mansion, so that you can keep exploring by yourself.
