Chiloe Island: Chacao, Ancud & Puñihuil Penguins
Chiloe Island: Chacao, Ancud & Puñihuil Penguins
At 8:30 am, we'll leave from Puerto Varas and head to the village of Pargua. There, we'll take a ferry to Chacao, a small village on the island of Chiloé, one of the most picturesque parts of Chile.
From Chacao we'll travel to the Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument, a group of rocky islets off the coast of Chiloé. Puñihuil is a protected area where Humboldt and Patagonian penguins come to breed and raise their chicks. This penguin colony also attracts other species, such as the red-legged cormorant and the kelp gull. We'll check out these animals on a boat ride, not included in the price of the excursion.
The next stop will take place in Ancud, where we'll visit what was the capital of the island until 1982. We'll learn about the colonial history of Chiloé by visiting the Regional Museum and the well-preserved Fort San Antonio.
After observing the battery of cannons on the fort, we'll head to the municipal market, where you'll find local handicrafts and foods sourced from both land and sea. You have an hour of your own free time to try some of the delicious local gastronomy at the various food stalls around the market.
Finally, we'll make our way back to Puerto Varas, where arrival is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
