Maio Island Day Trip
Maio Island Day Trip
At 5:30 am, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Praia and go to the Santiago island port. There, you'll have to present your ferry ticket to get to the island of Maio, one of the most beautiful and captivating in Cape Verde and the flattest of the whole archipelago!
After a 2-hour crossing, we'll arrive at the Porto Inglês dock, located in the south of Maio Island. Once we disembark, we'll visit the salt mines interpretation center. In this museum, we'll discover how the salt trade boosted the development of the island, which is the sixth in size of the ten that form the Cape Verde archipelago.
Then, we'll pass by the towns of Morro, Calheta, and Morrinho to see their crafts and landscapes. The dunes of Morrinho stand out significantly and remind us of the sand mountains of the Sahara, a perfect place for a selfie!
The tour will continue to the village of Pedro Vaz, where we'll have a typical Cape Verdean lunch that will include several specialties of the country. After lunch, we'll go to Vila do Maio, the island's capital, to visit the San José fortress and the church of Our Lady of Light.
The tour will conclude on the island with a brief stop at Bitchirotcha Beach, the most famous beach in Maio. From this cove, we'll go to the Porto Inglês dock to take the ferry back to the island of Santiago. After disembarking in its port, we'll take you to your hotel in Praia, arriving at 7:30 pm.
