    My wife and I really enjoyed the walking tour of the old town, conducted by Katherine (I’m not sure that is the correct spelling of her name..apologies if it isn’t.) It was so interesting and informative, giving us a fabulous history and feel of this beautiful city

The Powder Tower (also known as the Powder Gate) is one of the original 13 city gates in Prague's Old Town.

History

The history of Powder Tower dates back to 1475. One of the most significant monuments of Late Gothic Prague, it was through this gate that Czech kings would enter the Old Town during coronation processions.

Why is it called the Powder Tower?

The name 'Powder Tower' comes from its later use as a storage facility for gunpowder. During the 17th century, the tower was repurposed to store gunpowder and other munitions.
