With this excursion to the Caracoles mine, we'll explore one of the most famous active mines in Potosí. We'll see how the mine still functions.
Caracoles Mine Tour
At the selected time, we'll meet in front of the National Mint of Bolivia to begin this adventure through one of the working mines of Potosí.
We'll take a bus to the outskirts of the city, specifically to Cerro Rico, the most important silver deposit in the world. It was here that, during colonial times, most of the silver was extracted, which helped to enrich the Spanish Empire.
We'll put on our safety equipment and visit the mining market and the chemical laboratory where the minerals are analysed and classified.
We'll then climb the hill, stopping at a viewpoint to enjoy the beautiful views of Potosi from the top. We'll then enter the famous Caracoles mine, one of the few mines that are still active from colonial times.
As soon as we enter, we'll be welcomed by Tío, the miners' protector. Afterwards, we'll walk for two hours through the tunnels, we'll pass by miners busy at work.
After a four-hour tour, we'll return to the starting point in Potosí.
