At the indicated time, we'll meet at Praça de Gomes Teixeira, in front of the University of Porto, where we'll begin this exciting free tour of Porto at night. Are you ready to explore the city under the night sky?
At this first location, we'll learn about the university's legacy and its relevance for the people of Porto. We'll also admire the Carmo and Carmelitas Churches, located just in front of it. Nearby, we'll find the Café Piolho, an iconic café historically linked to university life. There are several theories about where it gets its name from, which literally translates as 'louse' in English. Although its true origin has never been confirmed, we'll hear the different versions about the origin of this curious nickname.
Next, we'll stroll along Rua Galerias de Paris, Porto's hub for nightlife. Here, we'll see several places to eat, drink, dance, but also dive even deeper into Porto's history. As we continue the route, we'll pass the City Hall, where we'll reveal more interesting facts about the Portuguese city. Then, we'll head to the Bolhão Market, the most iconic and historic market in the city—you'll definitely want to return to enjoy the market's buzz during the daytime.
Afterwards, we'll reach one of the most famous and most photographed churches in the country, the Chapel of Santa Catarina, also known as the Chapel of the Souls. From here, we'll go down the most important commercial and historical street of the city, the Rua Santa Catarina. Here, we'll see the long-lived and essential buildings of Portuguese life, such as the Grande Hotel do Porto, the Café Majestic, the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the São João National Theatre.
During our tour, we'll also walk along one of its most charming streets, Rua Chã, to be surprised by spectacular views of the illuminated Porto Cathedral and learn about the city's the Roman origins through the remains that can still be seen of its old wall.
Finally, we'll continue walking towards the symbolic Stock Exchange Palace, finishing our 2.5-hour free tour with an incredible night view of the Douro River from the Cais da Ribeira.
