Lagoa do Fogo Hiking Tour
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and hop on a minibus to head towards the west side of the island. From there we'll start hiking to reach the most iconic landmark on the island of Sao Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo.
In total, we'll tackle a 7.5-mile (12-km) trail that'll guide us to a lake located on the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. During this hiking tour, we'll traverse eucalyptus forests and talk about the vegetation and wildlife present in the forests on the Azores. Some of the plants that we'll find along the way are native to faraway lands such as New Zealand.
Halfway through, we'll reach a levada that leads to the very edge of Lagoa do Fogo, where you'll be amazed by the views of this magnificent volcanic lagoon. What's more, you'll have a perfect view of the village of Vila Franca do Campo and its famous islet.
The lagoon shore will be the perfect place to relax and refuel with a well-deserved picnic lunch. After a delicious and invigorating lunch, we'll start our way down through an area of pastures and vegetation.
On the way to Ponta Delgada, we'll stop at the Agua D'Alto beach as a finishing touch. Lastly, we'll go back to the starting point, where we'll part ways after 7 hours of touring.
