The picturesque town of Furnas, in the heart of Sao Miguel's countryside, is a hotbed of volcanic activity. Why not come and discover its breathtaking surroundings?
Description
We'll meet on Avenida João Bosco Mota Amaral in Sao Miguel's capital, Ponta Delgada, and set off along the island's southern coastline. We'll take our first stop in the charming coastal town of Vila Franca do Campo, where we'll be able to admire the Islet of Vila Franco do Campo: a large volcanic caldera located just off the town's coast.
Our route will continue inland, where the landscapes are characterised by their constant volcanic activity. To gain a better understanding we'll visit the calderas and lagoon of Furnas, discovering the origins of the various volcanic vents.
Once we've taken on our new volcanic knowledge, we'll replenish our energy with a traditional lunch in a nearby restaurant. After eating we'll head to the north of the island to visit the Gorreana tea plantations, one of the Azores Island's most famous tea manufacturers. We'll try some of their famous teas, to really appreciate their aromas and flavours, which have a delicious hint of sweetness to them. Finally, we'll head back to Ponta Delgada.
