Cantabrian Brown Bear Sighting

  • 13 reviews | 170 travellers
I didn't rate it as excellent because we couldn't see any bears. But this is part of Nature and wild animals. The weather that day was a bit complicated, from time to time some fog and even snow came in. It must be said that the guide, Javi, gave us the possibility, once on the ground and seeing the weather conditions, to cancel the visit without any cost. But we were encouraged to do the activity for the hope of seeing a bear. Recommended activity.

Description

We'll meet up at 4:30 pm at the Interpretation Centre in the Natural Park of Somiedo.  You'll need to come in your own car, and when we're all together, we'll each drive as we follow the guide's car and head for the mountains of this beautiful part of Asturias, the natural habitat of the Cantabrian brown bear.

Throughout the afternoon, we'll explore Somiedo in search of this amazing Iberian animal. We'll visit the best locations for spotting them depending on the weather on that particular day.

With the help of binoculars, you'll be able to spot magnificent specimens of Cantabrian brown bears. In this part of Asturias, it's very common to see adult bears with their cubs: their population has tripled in recent decades.

During the route, we may also spot wild boars, deer, or chamois, so keep an eye out at all times! Finally, we'll return to the original starting point in Pola de Somiedo, where our day among the Brown Bears comes to an end.

Bear watching

Somiedo Natural Park is one of the best places in the Principality of Asturias to see Cantabrian brown bears. However, the animals are unpredictable. The sighting of a greater or lesser number of specimens will depend on various factors, such as the weather at the time or the reproduction and breeding seasons of the different species.
