Discover some of the Caribbean's customs and traditions on our Garifuna Cultural Tour from Placencia. You'll learn how to play their percussion instruments and try the local dishes.
Garifuna Cultural Tour
After we've picked you up from your hotel in Placencia, we'll head towards the Garifuna village of Seine Bight.
The Garifuna are a large community descended from Arawak, Kalinago and Afro-Caribbean indigenous groups. This ethnic group is present in several Central American countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and, of course, Belize. The Belizean Garifuna are mainly concentrated in Seine Bight, where the locals will offer us a warm welcome.
As we stroll through the village, some of its representatives will talk to us about the customs, traditions and culture of the Garifuna people. In addition, we'll share a delicious traditional lunch with the members of their community, which will include some dishes from typical Garifuna gastronomy. Their dishes combine African and Caribbean cuisine in a perfect blend, highlighting different delicacies made with rice, fish and corn.
After lunch, we'll learn about the most important parts of Garifuna culture: their traditional music and dances. We'll attend a percussion workshop where we'll learn to play the drums, maracas and other popular instruments. If you'd like, you can even learn one of the Garifuna's rhythmically choreographed dances.
We'll then have to say our goodbyes and head back to Placencia, where we should arrive at your hotel at 4 pm.
