Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Day Trip
Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Day Trip
At 6 am, we'll set off from your hotel in Placencia and head to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. Here, we'll find Belize's most interesting and visited Mayan cave: the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, also known as the ATM cave.
Once we've arrived, we'll venture into these underground passages and discover their secrets. Inside, we'll see the remains of various human skeletons which, according to legend, were used in Mayan rituals. Some experts in this field have suggested that these bones were used as sacrifices in honour of the deity Chaac.
Our visit will continue through the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave so we can see the remains of a sacrificed adolescent named the Crystal Maiden. The Maiden's bones have crystallised over the centuries, giving their body a glowing appearance that is the source of their ominous nickname. We'll also discuss if this body is hiding any more secrets...
After we've emerged from the ATM Cave, we'll go to a local restaurant. We'll have a delicious traditional lunch with different speciality dishes from the Yucatan Peninsula, which combines Mayan cuisine with typical Caribbean dishes.
We'll then return to your hotel in Placencia, where we'll arrive at 5:30 pm.
