Piura and Catacaos Day Trip
Description
We'll get this historical tour started at 9 am after pickup at your hotel in Piura.
Our first stop will be Plaza de Armas, the city's center. Here we can see the Catedral de Piura, constructed in the 16th century in honor of San Miguel, who has a curious history you'll enjoy learning about from your guide. From here we'll continue on to the Casa Museo Almirante Miguel Grau. This building in particular was destroyed after an earthquake in 1912 but was repaired in 1964 by the Peruvian Navy.
After a guided visit to San Miguel Bridge and the Piura River, which can be optional, we'll head towards Simbila. A small village about 5 km (3.1 miles) away, that is home to ceramic artisans. Close by is the city of Catacaos, which has also become a popular city in the Piura region.
Once we arrive at Catacaos, you'll have a free hour to enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants before taking a guided tour of the old city. Some points of interest are sites like Plaza de Armas, the Monumento al Bachiller Juan de Mori Alvarado, and the San Juan Bautista Temple. We'll also take a walk to Market Street for some souvenirs from this ceramic city.
As we stroll through Catacaos, we'll explore charming shops with an array of region-specific products. Along the way, we'll have the delightful opportunity to savor some of the region's typical sweets. Be prepared to learn all about crafting the renowned algarrobina, a sweet syrup. To conclude our journey, we'll step into galleries full of artisanal silver and gold creations.
We'll conclude the tour, returning to Piura at 4 pm.
