Clay Chiva-Making Workshop
Workshop Details
At the designated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Pitalito and we'll take you to the venue where you'll enjoy this clay chiva-making workshop, one of Colombia's most famous crafting traditions.
To begin our journey into the fascinating world of clay and pottery, we'll first visit the Manos de Alfareros clay factory. Here, we'll learn about the handling and industrial process that goes into creating these crafts.
Next, we'll head over to Pitalito's Artisan Cooperative COARPI, where we'll get to know the history, conception, and process behind one of the products with the Huila designation of origin status: "La Chiva de Pitalito".
These chivas are a representation of the typical transport in the country's rural areas. Farmers ride them to take their harvests to market squares and to attend events in the village. Chickens, fruit, corn sacks, and potato sacks are often placed on a rack on the bus' roof.
After learning about the theory, it's time to create our very own chiva, giving it textures, decorations, and a lot of colours. You'll love shaping your very own souvenir that you'll be able to take home as a colourful symbol of Colombian identity.
Once the workshop comes to an end, we'll take you back to the initial meeting point, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 5 hours.
