It was the 14th century and King Charles VI of France was in his heyday, and the dominance he possessed is proved by the great architectural works of the time. A small and partially ruined fort from the 12th century wasn't enough to demonstrate his power, the French monarch wanted to boast. So his solution was to reconstruct the previous outdated stronghold and build an elegant fortress known as the Chateau de Pierrefonds.
By booking this ticket for the castle, you'll be able to discover the interior of one of the best-preserved monuments within the French administrative division of Oise, in the Celtic region of Hauts-de-France. The ticket includes a leaflet in English and other languages so you can visit at your own pace and calmly stop to take in the grand extravagance of any room you like!
Inside the Chateau de Pierrefonds, you'll find a variety of paintings, jewels and vintage furniture belonging to different periods throughout the history of France: from the Middle Ages to Napoleon Bonaparte and his descendants, who visited the castle on several occasions. In fact, it was Napolean III who commissioned the prestigious architect Viollet-le-Duc to restore the monument to achieve the look you see today.
During your visit around the Chateau de Pierrefonds, you'll also come across some halls that have been used to shoot television series and films such as The Story of Joan of Arc and The Man in the Iron Mask, the latter starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Opening hours
The Chateau de Pierrefonds has the following opening hours:
- May 2 - September 4: 9:30 am - 6 pm
- September 5 - April 30: 10 am - 5:30 pm
On the 24th and 31st of December, the monument closes at 3:30 pm.
Last entry is 1 hour before closing time. Please note these hours are subject to change.
Please note that the Salle des Preuses is currently closed due to maintenance work.
Free admission
Admission to the Chateau de Pierrefonds is free for the following individuals:
- Youth from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old.
- Children under 18 years old, regardless of their nationality.
In order to acquire the free admission mentioned above, you'll have to go to the site’s ticket office and present a certifying document of your eligibility for a free ticket.
Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31, between November 1 and December 31, and the third weekend of September.
