Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo
Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo
We'll pick you up at 8:30 am at your hotel in Pica, and from there we'll travel in a 4x4 vehicle to the Huasco Salt Flat, a spectacular nature sanctuary located in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, near the border with Bolivia.
Upon arrival, we'll have a snack that includes an energy bar, nuts, fruit, and a drink either of coffee or herbal tea. After gathering energy, we'll set off on a 1-kilometer (0.62-mile) hike through this spectacular salt flat located 4000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. The high altitude gives these landscapes a unique beauty that will undoubtedly capture your heart.
For about an hour, we'll cross the Huasco salt flat and look out for native animals such as flamingos, rheas, and numerous kinds of desert birds. Along the way, we'll discover how these species have managed to adapt to such an arid and inhospitable environment.
After the walk through the Huasco salt flat, we'll hop back in the vehicle and head over to the nearby Tambillo nature reserve to walk through its spectacular gorge and check out the various pictographs from pre-Columbian times.
From Tambillo we'll finally return to your hotel in Pica, where we'll arrive at 1 pm.
