Fossil Route Hike
Description
Meet us at Avenida 25 de Abril in Penha Garcia, and from there, we'll kick off our adventure along the renowned Fossil Route.
Did you know that millions of years ago, this region of Portugal was entirely underwater? On this 3 km (1.8 miles) trek around Penha Garcia, we'll unearth the fossils of prehistoric creatures that once called this area home, with some of these fossils dating back a staggering 400 million years!
Our first stop is a lookout point featuring stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We'll then meander past the medieval castle of Penha Garcia and carry on our hike, all the while on the lookout for the fossilized imprints of ancient creatures within the rocks. Among the prominent finds in this area are the trilobites, ancient arthropods that made their appearance in the early stages of the Paleozoic era.
Throughout the hike, we'll see plenty of rocks with fossilized remains of trilobites and other creatures. After observing these paleontological remains, we'll continue the route toward the Penha Garcia dam.
Finally, after 2 hours, we'll bring our hike into the past to an end and return to the initial meeting point.
