With this excursion to the Galeras volcano we'll discover the culture, crafts and cuisine of its villages, located in the foothills of the mountain range and characterised by agriculture and livestock farming.
Galeras Volcano + Villages Tour
We'll meet at 8:30 am next to the monument of Antonio Nariño to begin this adventure in which we'll discover the surroundings of the Galeras volcano. Did you know that it's the most active volcano in Colombia?
During this tour we'll visit some of the villages located on the slopes of the volcano. After a road trip surrounded by coffee plantations and canyons, we'll arrive at Genoy, a community that has learned to coexist with the Galeras volcano, since they are only 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) apart!
After learning about the history of this village, we'll stop in the municipality of Nariño, where you can buy the famous yucca wrappers, a typical sweet. The next stop will be in La Florida, another town where agriculture and livestock farming are very important. You can also find a wide variety of dairy products such as cheese, cakes and ice cream.
Next, we'll travel to the community of Sandoná, from where we'll start a short walk to visit one of the many waterfalls in this volcanic area. On the way back to the village, we'll meet the weavers, women of the community who work the iraca fibre from tropical palm into all kinds of objects, from hats to bracelets.
In Sandoná we'll also visit the school, and then follow a trail that will take us to a local farm where we'll enjoy a delicious homemade lunch with the host family, who will also let us taste their special high-altitude coffee, grown in the surrounding mountains.
We'll then walk through the main square, where we'll see the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Sandoná, a majestic neo-Gothic building that houses a wooden Christ by sculptor Alfonso Zambrano.
From here we'll head to Consaca, the last village we'll visit. You'll be impressed by the views of the volcanic mountain range from this point, where the different shades of colour blend with the panela fields. We'll visit the traditional sugar mills, where the panela canes are ground, and you'll be able to taste the delicious 'melcocha sandoneña', a sweet made from panela and peanuts.
Finally, we'll start our return to Pasto and arrive at the departure point at around 6:30 pm
