About the Arc de Triomphe
It's said that Napoleon Bonaparte, possibly feeling a bit sensitive about his short stature, took a unique approach to ensure others shared his frustrations. How did he do that? In 1805, after the French victory in the Battle of Austerlitz, the perfect occasion presented itself: he ordered a large monument to be built that would not only commemorate the victory but also make anyone who admired its outstanding architecture feel small and insignificant. And so, the Arc de Triomphe project came to life, although ironically, Napoleon did not live to see the finished masterpiece.
Standing proudly at the culmination of the renowned Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe proudly displays the names of Napoleon's major victories etched into its walls. Just beneath these inscriptions lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. An eternal flame burns here in remembrance of those who lost their lives and remained unidentified in both World Wars.
Opening Times & Practical Info
The Arc de Triomphe in Paris is open during the following times:
- April 1 to September 30: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 11 pm and Tuesdays from 11 am to 11 pm
- October 1 to March 31: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 10:30 pm and on Tuesdays from 11 am to 10:30 pm
For safety and capacity reasons, the Arc de Triomphe may close early if there are large crowds. To ensure you have time to enjoy your visit, we recommend not leaving it until the end of the day. Visiting after 11 am can help you avoid the early morning crowds.
Special Operating Times
The Arc de Triomphe will open at 11 am on the following dates:
- Every weekend, including Fridays, until December 31, 2025
- From Friday, June 6 to Monday, June 9, 2025
- Thursday, June 19, 2025
- From Friday, July 4 until Sunday, August 31, 2025
- From Thursday, October 16 to Sunday, November 2 and November 11, 2025
- From Friday, December 19, 2025, to Sunday, January 4, 2026
Additionally, the Arc de Triomphe will open at 11:30 am every Tuesday in May 2025. And on May 31 the closing time will be 5:30 pm instead of 11 pm.
Days with special closing times:
- May 24, 2025: at 9 pm
- May 31, 2025: at 5:30 pm
- July 14, 2025: at 2 pm
- November 11, 2025: at 2 pm
- December 24, 2025: at 4 pm
- December 31, 2025: at 4 pm
In all these cases, final admission takes place 45 minutes before closing time.
Free Admission
Admission to the Arc de Triomphe is free for the following individuals:
- Young people from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old
- Children under 18 years old, regardless of their nationality
Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31 and between November 1 and December 31. Similarly, the 3rd weekend of September is free.
In order to acquire the free admission mentioned above, you'll have to go to the site's ticket office and present a certifying document of your eligibility for a free ticket.
