Scuba Diving in Portobelo
Description
At the time of booking, you can choose between two options: with or without a diving license. Both have a duration of 8.5-9 hours and include pickup and drop off at the hotel, transportation by minibus and boat, an English-speaking guide, diving equipment, and lunch.
Diving with a license
After picking you up at 7:30 am at your hotel in Panama City, we'll take an hour and a half long drive to Portobelo.
Once there, we'll head to the coast to enter the Atlantic Ocean and, depending on the license you have, we'll dive at one depth or another. We'll make 2 dives with a duration of 45-60 minutes each. The first one, if the weather is ameanable, will be at Drake Island, known for the stories of the pirate of the same name and its rich biodiversity. During the dive, you'll be able to see corals, tuna, marlins, seahorses, turtles, and manta rays.
Afterward, we'll return to the boat to go back to Portobelo and have lunch. The lunch will include chicken or fish with a choice of coconut rice, french fries, or patacones (fried plantains). Following this delicious meal, we'll take a short walk around the city to see some of its forts, which were used to fend off pirates in the past.
The return to the hotel in Panama City is scheduled between 4 and 5 pm.
Diving without a license
This option follows the same itinerary as the previous one, but the dives will take place near Portobelo Bay, in shallow waters. Before diving, we'll give you some basic instructions so that you can dive on your own with the help of a guide. We'll dive in the Atlantic at a depth of 10 meters in both dives and enjoy a unique experience under the sea.
Diving areas
Depending on the weather, sea conditions, or visibility, the possible dive sites could be Drake Island, Buenaventura, Salmedina, El Faro, Padre Island, Tres Hermanas, Huertas, Parche Point or El Avion. The same day of the activity we'll choose the areas where we'll dive.
Diving license requirements
In order to participate in this dive trip, you must have the international Open Water Diver certificate or similar, which certifies that you're prepared for this dive.
Hotel Pickup
This activity only includes hotel pickup from hotels in downtown Panama City.
