Kogi Indigenous Community Day Trip

  • 1 review | 16 travellers
Such a fun and interesting day. Brice was a great guide and Carlos an expert driver in difficult driving conditions. Meeting the Kogi people was certainly one of the highlights of our time in Colombia; really fascinating and we learned so much about their lives from our short visit. Brice organised an extra activity for us - a cacao demonstration and tasting experience with a local lady. The day ended with a cooling off in the beautiful Don Diego River We highly recommend this trip

Kogi Indigenous Community Day Trip

At 7 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Palomino and set off on our day trip to the rainforest of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Let the adventure begin!

After a 1-hour drive, we'll arrive at the village of Quebrada del Sol. We'll have a typical breakfast here and be welcomed by a local guide who'll tell us all about the history and customs of the community we're about to meet.

We'll then walk for 1 hour to get to the Kogi Mulkwakungui village. When we get there, we'll learn all about the Kogi's traditions. You'll also have the chance to meet the Mamo, the figure that holds the highest authority in the village.

Anyone hungry? At 12:30 pm, we'll have a lunch of soup, a main course, juice and fruit. We'll then head to the Don Diego River where you'll have 1 hour of free time to take a refreshing swim.

Having spent an unforgettable day learning about one of Colombia's Indigenous groups, we'll get back into our vehicle at 3 pm and return to Palomino.

2-Day Trip

If you'd like to spend more time learning about the Kogi, you can book the 2-day trip. On the first day we'll do the same activities as in the itinerary described above, as well as a chocolate workshop.

Afterwards, we'll have a traditional farmer's lunch in the Quebrada del Sol and see how the Kogi weave different items. In the afternoon, we'll head to some pools to go swimming. After this refreshing dip, we'll return to the village to rest and have a delicious dinner.

Rise and shine! We'll wake up with an energising breakfast and set off on a hike to the Don Diego River so we can explore it aboard a small raft. Our raft will take us to the Arhuaco Kandumake Indigenous people, who'll share their customs with us. At 12 noon, we'll return to the village to have a tasty lunch.

It'll then be time to pack our bags and say our goodbyes. We'll set off on our return journey to Palomino and drop you back at your hotel at around 5 pm.

Accommodation

The 2-day trip includes 1 night's accommodation with breakfast in a cabin at the village.

Pick up

When making your booking, you'll be able to choose the option with pick up from your hotel in Palomino by jeep. If you don't book this option, you'll need to head to the meeting point. From there, you'll head to the Kogi Indigenous community by motorbike.
