Matera Excursion
Matera Excursion
Early in the morning, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Palinuro and head by bus to Matera. Get ready to explore one of Italy's most fascinating locations!
Once we arrive, we'll begin a tour of the center of Matera, one of the world's oldest cities, famous for its unique dwellings called the Sassi. Did you know that they were declared a World Heritage Site in 1993?
During the tour, we'll visit the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso, two truly extraordinary districts. Our guide will tell us about their history, from the living conditions of the people of Matera in the 1950s to the splendor of today and the naming of Matera as a European Capital of Culture in 2019.
Walking through the streets of the center, our attention will be captured by some of the city's most important Baroque temples, such as the Matera Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and the Church of Santa Chiara. Absolutely stunning!
After a short break to grab some lunch, those who wish can visit some of the famous rock churches of Matera, including the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, the Church of San Pietro Barisano and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.
At the end of the excursion, we'll get back on the bus to return to Palinuro.
