Embark on a journey through Palermo's baroque artistry as we explore the churches of Santa Caterina, San Giuseppe, and Gesù. Founded in the 16th and 17th centuries, these three churches showcase stunning examples of baroque architecture, each revealing its own secrets.
Visit Palermo's Three Most Beautiful Churches
Our meeting point is the Palermo Quattro Canti Hotel, where we'll set off on a tour that promises to unveil the beauty of three of Palermo's most breathtaking churches.
First up is the Church of San Giuseppe dei Teatini. Did you know that it's the most visited church in Palermo? Inside, the frescoes exemplify Sicilian baroque art. Notably, two holy water fountains sculpted by Ignazio Marabitti, a prominent city sculptor, can also be found here.
A short walk from the Church of San Giuseppe brings us to the Church of Santa Caterina. Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, this temple harmoniously combines late Renaissance features on its facade with a baroque interior. We'll admire its choir, main altar, opulent chapels, and frescoes while delving into the history of this convent church.
Our final stop is the Church of Gesù, also known as Casa Professa. The austere exterior of this 17th-century Jesuit church sharply contrasts with its ornate interior. Countless sculptures, polychrome inlays, marble ornaments, and frescoes adorn this Catholic monument. We'll share intriguing details about the building and discuss the challenges it faced post-World War II.
After three hours of exploration, we'll conclude the guided tour with a farewell outside the Church of Santa Caterina.
