History

Auschwitz Birkenau was the principal and most notorious of the six concentration camps established by Nazi Germany as part of the Final Solution policy. Active between 1940 and 1945, over a million prisoners, predominantly Jewish, were killed within its confines, leaving an indelible mark on human history.

How to get there via public transport

The concentration camp of Auschwitz and Birkenau is located in the city of Oswiecim, about 66 kilometres (41 miles) west of Krakow.

The easiest way to get to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp from Krakow is via bus, going from Krakow MDA Station to Oswiecim Muzeum, which takes 1.5-2 hours.

Alternatively, a direct train runs from Krakow's main train station to Oswiecim Central Station, which is around 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) from the site. This journey takes 1.5-2.5 hours.
