Day Trip to Mariana & Congonhas
Tour itinerary: Congonhas and Mariana excursion
We'll pick you up at your hotel in Ouro Preto at the scheduled time and kick off our expedition to Mariana and Congonhas—two gems nestled in the heart of Minas Gerais.
Our first stop is Congonhas, a 17th-century city steeped in the legacy of pioneers who, in search of resources and precious materials, shaped its destiny. Our visit begins at the Sanctuary of the Lord Good Jesus of Matosinhos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Marvel at the architectural marvel and discover its history as a colonial-era pilgrimage center.
The courtyard of this complex boasts awe-inspiring sculptures of the Twelve Prophets of the Old Testament, crafted by the famed artist Aleijadinho in the early 19th century. Prepare to be astonished!
Next, we'll approach the chapels of Passos da Paixão de Cristo, locally known as "Passinhos," where representations of the Passion of Christ unfold, revealing Aleijadinho's enduring legacy. Our exploration concludes at Congonhas' museum, delving deeper into the city's rich history.
Following a one-hour lunch break at a local restaurant, we'll venture to Mariana, the erstwhile capital of Minas Gerais. Amble through the Minas Gerais Square, adorned with colonial-era monuments, as our guided tour unveils the city's significance in the Brazilian Gold Route. Admire the Pelourinho and the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, now the City Hall.
Our journey through Mariana continues with a visit to the Cathedral, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, a venerable structure dating back to 1703! Nearby, the rococo marvel of the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church awaits, a testament to architectural prowess accomplished in just 50 years.
Culminating our adventure, we'll delve into the Passagem mine, gaining insights into the extraction of precious metals. Brace yourself for an impressive experience!
After nine hours of exploration, we'll return to Ouro Preto, concluding our tour and saying our goodbyes.
