Free Walking Tour of Ohrid
Free Walking Tour of Ohrid
At 11 am, we'll meet up in the Ohrid's Central Square and set off on a walking tour through the historic centre of this World Heritage City.
To begin, we'll wander through the streets and make our way to two traditional workshops. One of these workshops is for wooden handicrafts, and the other is for handmade paper. At the latter, we'll discover how paper is made following an ancient Chinese process.
As we stroll through Ohrid, we'll admire the façades on the houses built during the Ottoman Empire. We'll also visit some traditional markets to learn all about the gastronomy of North Macedonia.
Next, we'll visit the Church of St. Clement. Nearby, we'll find a university that dates back to the 9th century, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe. We'll talk about the Slavic people who founded this institution and the effects the Ottoman invasion had on this building.
Before saying our goodbyes, we'll see a Greek theatre from the 2nd century BC and learn how pearls, a symbol of Ohrid, are made. These pearls are renowned worldwide and even form part of Queen Elizabeth II's jewellery collection.
Our free walking tour of Ohrid will come to an end at 2 pm back at the starting point.
