Discover Zapotec culture, on this tour of the different villages of Oaxaca. We'll visit the Tule Tree, the Mitla archaeological site, and a mezcal distillery.
Excursion to Teotitlán del Valle, Mitla & Mezcal Distillery
Having picked you up at your hotel, we'll make our way 7 miles (12 km) to visit Santa Maria del Tule. Here you can see the tree with the largest trunk in the world: at 14 metres in diameter and over 1,400 years old!
The next stop will be the colourful Teotitlán del Valle, where the local artisans make and paint different kinds of textiles in the same way as their ancestors have for generations. You'll get first-hand tales of the Zapotec culture, a way of life that has been diligently conserved in this village throughout the years.
Our route then continues to Mitla, one of the most important architectural regions in Oaxaca. Here we'll tour the ruins of a Zapotec village, which was once a seat of great learning in architecture, astronomy, and engineering. You'll admire the extraordinary decoration of the walls and explore the ornate halls which lead to the church itself.
Then we'll visit a candle workshop to learn the ins and outs of an ancient craft that has been passed down through the generations. We'll learn about a traditional type of candle called vela de concha and about the process of making aromatic candles. Our excursion ends by learning about the process of mezcal production. You'll even enjoy a tasting of this local spirit, noting the different hints of flavor!
Then, after a whole day immersed in Zapotec culture, we'll head back to Oaxaca, where we'll leave you at your hotels once more.
