Tlacolula, San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya & Yagul Day Trip
At 10 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Oaxaca and set off for the first stop of the day, the San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya former convent.
Once we've arrived, we'll have time to stroll around this ecclesiastical complex, founded by the Dominicans in 1558. We'll admire the 17th-century polychrome altarpiece and the only bellows organ in the region. The famous writer, friar and military man Juan de Córdova, who published two books on the Zapotec language and culture, lived in these rooms.
Afterwards, we'll see the stunning Municipal Presidency of San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya Palace. This imposing building has striking features, such as its portico and the arches that adorn the façade as a unique form of decoration.
We'll then head to the Yagul archaeological site. Here, we'll see mural paintings in the different tombs discovered here, the remains of a large ceremonial centre, the largest ball game in Oaxaca and a hilltop fortress believed to date back to 500 BC.
Our last stop will be the Tlacolula de Matamoros market, where we'll meet the local Oaxacan merchants. We'll learn about the market's traditions and products, observe the bartering between clients and vendors and hear the Zapotec language being spoken among merchants. You'll also be able to try the local sorbet or the famous charcoal-grilled meats.
Lastly, we'll return to your hotel in Oaxaca where we should arrive at 2:30 pm.
