Day of the Dead is one of Mexico's most celebrated festivals. Join us as we explore Oaxaca to discover the history and legends surrounding this spooky tradition by night.
Tour Details
Ready to invite ancestors to share this evening with you? After meeting at Cruz de Piedra Square, we'll begin our Day of the Dead tour by making our way to the famous Santo Domingo Square. It is the perfect spot to begin to learn about the history behind Oaxaca's celebrations.
From this square, we'll view the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. This old convent is adorned with some of the most colourful decorations for the Day of the Dead. Are your cameras all charged up? You'll want to use them from the second the tour starts!
We'll continue walking through the vibrant streets in the centre of Oaxaca until we reach the Panteón General. Here, under the cloak of night, we'll experience the very essence of the celebration firsthand. Amongst tombs, music, and incense, we'll talk about the Day of the Dead traditions, their significance, and the close relationship that Mexicans have with death.
Next, we'll head over to the traditional Jalatlaco neighbourhood. Here we'll witness how the local people accompany and watch over their deceased family members throughout the night. Flowers, incense, and strong symbolism will feature prominently on this special night. We'll walk through alleyways that come alive with dozens of intricate altars at the entrances of the houses.
To top off the night, we'll head to an exclusive local spot to enjoy a delicious dinner featuring traditional Day of the Dead dishes. Enjoy!
Lastly, we'll say our goodbyes at the end of this 4-hour tour.
