French Quarter Guided Tour
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at 815 Toulouse Street and start this guided tour of the French Quarter of New Orleans. Are you ready to discover the must-see spots in the French Quarter and learn about the history of the Vieux Carré? From the mighty Mississippi River to buildings which predate the country, to present-day curious and unique locales. You'll soon understand why people become captivated by the city and keep coming back for more.
Our first stop will be Bourbon Street. Famous for its many bars, this street spans a staggering 13 blocks! As we stroll along, you'll learn about the fascinating beginnings of the city that shaped this world-famous neighbourhood. The local guide will also point out the best bars, restaurants, and hidden gems to see on your visit here.
Our route will also take us up Royal Street, one of the original streets of the city that dates back to the early 18th century. Today, it's known for its many art galleries, antique shops and hotels. We'll then pass by the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, whose building was a classic townhouse of the French Quarter constructed in 1822-1823. Did you know that it was the residence of the first licensed pharmacist in the US?
Another building that will catch your eye is St. Louis Cathedral. Presiding over the square, it's one of the great icons of the French Quarter. It's also the oldest Catholic church in the United States! There we'll also see the Cabildo, which was the seat of colonial power in Louisiana.
On our walk, we won't only break down the architecture of the city, but frame it in its cultural impact – where the styles come from, and what the architects sought to express. Beyond the architecture, we'll talk about the numerous people who have contributed to the development of the city – the food, the music, the festivals – all the way to the candy colours of the houses.
Of course, we'll talk about Voodoo and Mardi Gras, and answer all of your most burning questions. What actually is lagniappe? What’s the difference between Creole and Cajun? And did the Virgin Mary actually help New Orleans to win a Super Bowl? All will be revealed in no time!
After approximately 2 hours of discovering the French Quarter, we'll end the tour at Jackson Square. See you next time!
