Olive Oil Tour of Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo

  • 2 reviews | 17 travellers
This was an excellent day. The olive oil farm was very informative and interesting. I was surprised just how far north we travelled and therefore how much scenery we saw. Took one route up and another back. Lunch was excellent and plentiful in restaurant with panoramic view. This tour definitely takes you off the tourist track and into the real spanish way of life. Our guide, Ceprio, was amazing and grew up in this very area... an excellent day from pickup at 9am in Nerja to drop off at 5:30.

Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo Olive Oil Tour Itinerary

We will depart from your hotel in Nerja and head to an ancient olive grove in the province of Malaga. Here we will witness the traditional techniques of cultivating and harvesting olives that were subsequently used in the elaboration of olive oil - the ‘liquid gold’ of Andalucía.

We continue the trip by visiting in the surroundings an authentic Andalusian farmhouse fitted with its own oil mill, the press used for the extraction of oil. We then move on from the theory to the practice with a comprehensive tasting of a wide variety of olives.

Now you have whetted your appetite, we will move to the foothills of Malaga to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at the Venta de Alfarnate, one of the oldest in Andalucia. The menu includes a drink and typical local dish of sausage, pork, migas, fried eggs, and oranges.

Besides being a restaurant, La Venta del Alfarnate also houses a small museum. The exhibitions teach us about the skirmishes between the civil population and Napoleon’s troops during the war of Independence, which started in 1808.

After eating we will journey into the so-called “Pyrenees of Malaga” to visit the pretty mountain villages of Alfarnatejo and Alfarnate. Surrounded by olive groves, these municipalities offer a sharp contrast to the landscapes of the neighboring Costa del Sol. Finally, we will head south back to Nerja.
