Elephanta Caves Tour
Elephanta Caves Tour
We'll meet at 10:30 am in front of the PizzaExpress restaurant. From there, we'll head towards the Gateway of India, where we'll hop on a ferry that will take us to the Elephanta Caves, a stunning architectural and artistic marvel that to this day is considered one of the most sacred temples in Bombay.
Once we arrive at this World Heritage Site, we'll step into these vast caverns and first see the galleries of the Shiva Cave, where we'll come across several stone carvings representing the most important moments in the life of this Hindu god.
Throughout the tour, we'll share many interesting facts about the caves. Did you know that they are believed to have been built between 810 and 1260? Also, in the 16th century, some of the statues were severely damaged because they were used for target practice.
The tour of the Elephanta Caves will continue as we explore the various sanctuaries and wander through the carved passageways. Arriving at the main grotto, we'll stop to marvel at the great sculpture of Trimurti, dedicated to the three gods of the Hindu religion: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
After this insight into Hindu history and culture, we'll board the ferry again and conclude this tour back at the Gateway of India four to five hours after our initial departure.
