Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Sierra Chincua
At 7 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Morelia and head to the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. The drive will take us approximately two and a half hours.
Once we arrive, we'll get out of the minibus and head into the trails in search of monarch butterflies. These beautiful insects travel thousands of kilometres from the northern United States and Canada to reach this environment of fir, pine and oyamel trees.
Halfway along the way, we'll stop for an hour's break and enjoy a snack. We'll then continue our route through the Chincua mountain range and around Tlalpujahua to see the colonies of butterflies. Did you know that they measure 11 centimetres with their wings open and weigh no more than half a gram? Despite this, their pollination work is of great importance for the forests of Mexico.
We'll arrive at the nesting site of the monarch butterflies, where we'll find eggs, caterpillars and chrysalises. At this point you'll have an hour of free time to get some lunch. With renewed energy, we'll return to the starting point of the route, which we'll reach in approximately 40 minutes.
Finally, we'll take you back to your hotel in Morelia, where we'll arrive at 10 pm.
