Explore one of the most fascinating attractions in the state of Michoacán on this tour of Janitzio Island and enjoy a tranquil boat cruise on Lake Patzcuaro.
Tour of Janitzio Island
At 9 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Morelia and head to the jetty of Lake Patzcuaro, where we'll board a boat to discover the many attractions of this enchanting lagoon.
After an hour's cruise on Lake Patzcuaro, we'll make a trip to Isla Janitzio, an island of volcanic origin. We'll see the fishermen at work with their famous butterfly nets, and, if we keep our eyes peeled, we'll also get to see the charal, black bass, tilapia and carp that fill the lake.
Disembaring on Janitzio Island, we'll climb up to the statue of José María Morelos, a towering monument honouring one of the most famous figures of Mexican Independence.
We'll then continue our tour of the town, where we'll admire the Casa de los Once Patios and the Temple and College of the Society of Jesus, a 16th century building that hides a dark legend in its clock tower. We'll also stop to admire the Basilica of San Jerónimo, where we will learn about the history of Vasco de Quiroga and the Purepecha indigenous people. You'll then have an hour of free time for lunch.
Finally, we'll take the boat back to the departure pier and return to Morelia, where we'll arrive at your hotel at 5 pm.
