At 9:30 am, we'll meet in front of the Igreja Matriz de São Salvador to start this guided tour of Monsanto. Are you ready to discover the highlights of one of the 12 historical villages of Portugal? Let's go!
After seeing the façade of the church and learning about its history, we'll start walking through the quiet and picturesque streets of Monsanto. As we go down the road that leads to the castle of Monsanto, we'll delve into the town's past and learn about the battles fought here where authentic living legends were born.
Gradually, we'll enter the rugged landscape of Monsanto, which is characterized by being embedded in a granite mountain. Did you know that this town is known for not only its peculiar location, but also for being the most Portuguese village in all of Portugal?
Finally, we'll reach the castle of Monsanto, which still retains part of its walls, the towers of Lucena and Piao, the half-ruined chapel of San Miguel, and the restored chapel of Santa Maria do Castelo.
In addition to being a site steeped in history, the castle is a perfect vantage point to get the best views of Monsanto and its surroundings!
Two hours of exploring later, we'll finish the guided tour of Monsanto by arriving back at the starting point.
