On this Šargan Eight train ride, you'll hop on board the most famous tourist attraction of western Serbia and experience what it was like to travel in 20th-century trains as you enjoy an incredible landscape.
The Šargan Eight, Europe's Narrowest Train
The Šargan Eight train is a true masterpiece in the world of railroads. From 1925 to 1974, this means of transport connected Belgrade with Sarajevo and kept the gates of the mountain of Mokra Gora open to the world.
Although it stopped operating in 1974, about 20 years later, conversation started about its restoration. In the summer of 2004, the first recently restored train line started to operate between Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi, a route of 9.6 miles (15.5 kilometers).
The most fascinating thing about this train is its track in the shape of an 8, and winds through a complex system of 22 tunnels and 5 bridges. Did you know this tunnel is 5,465 feet (1,666 meters) long? This design was chosen by the engineers of the time, as they couldn't climb the steep hills with a drop of more than 984 feet (300 meters).
On our journey on board the Šargan Eight, which will last 2.5 hours in total, we'll depart from the station in Mokra Gora on the old wagons with a wooden interior, recreating the style of the trains from the beginning of the 20th century.
Once we reach Šargan Vitasi, you'll have around 30 minutes to walk on the platform of the old locomotives on display there. Afterward, you'll climb on board the wagon again, and on our journey back, the train will make five brief stops so you can take pictures and admire the impressive views of the landscapes.
Lush valleys surrounded by traditional wooden houses await on this unique journey on board the narrowest train in Europe. Don't miss it!
