Industrial and Handicraft Textile Museum Guided Tour
Tour Details
The Industrial and Handicraft Textile Museum (MIAT) is located inside an old carpet factory in the center of Portugal. This century-old building in Mira de Aire is home to a vast collection of artisanal equipment and industrial machines used in the wool transformation process.
Throughout this guided tour of the MIAT, you'll learn about the history of the golden age of Portuguese textiles, when Mira de Aire and Minde, its neighboring town, were this sector's leaders during the 20th century.
During the visit, you'll learn about the different stages of the textile process–from wool shearing, washing, and carding to dyeing and sewing the material. Plus, you'll discover how blankets and other textile garments are crafted.
To wrap up this tour, which will last between 1 hour and 1.5 hours, we'll share other intriguing curiosities about the textile world that will surely surprise you.
Opening Times
The MIAT opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. The guided visits are every 60 minutes. If you prefer, you can also visit the museum at your own pace without a guide.
