Join us and experience the Day of the Dead on this tour to San Andrés Mixquic and learn about the traditions of this famous and colourful Mexican celebration.
Day of the Dead Experience
"Because death is life, light lights elsewhere". This phrase from the film Coco nicely summarises what the Day of the Dead festival means for Mexicans. This celebration has even been declared of World Heritage importance. We'll start to learn about this festivity by hearing different stories and facts about this day at 154 Avenida de la República, where our tour begins.
We'll board a vehicle and start our journey to San Andrés Mixquic, one of the 7 original towns in Alcaldía Tláhuac, where we'll start the tour. Along the way, we'll have a picnic-style lunch so that we'll be full of energy when we arrive at our destination.
Once there, we'll visit the historic centre of San Andrés Mixquic to admire the Day of the Dead decorations. As we walk around its colourfully decorated streets, we'll learn about the origins of this festival. Did you know that during the time of the Aztecs, the living honoured their loved ones in a special way?
We'll pass by the San Andrés Apóstol Church and see different altars for the Day of the Dead. All of these offer skulls and photographs to remember their family members who have passed away. We'll find out how these small shrines are prepared since each one has its own rituals.
For Mexican families, the Day of the Dead is a very important celebration. Parents, grandparents, siblings and other distant or close family members meet up at cemeteries to remember all those who have lived before. We'll also explore what graveyards usually do to honour the memory of the dead.
After learning all about this special day, we'll return to Mexico City. We'll arrive here after an 11-hour activity.
