Metaponto Archaeological Park Private Visit
Metaponto Archaeological Park Private Visit
At the agreed time, we'll meet at the entrance of the National Museum and start our private visit around the Archaeological Park of Metapontum.
During our visit, we'll take a journey through history to the ancient city of Metapontum. This city was founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC in a fertile area between the Bradano and Basento rivers. Dominating the plain of what is now Metapontino, it was an important hub of Magna Graecia's grain trade. Unsurprisingly, a golden ear of corn was engraved on the city's coins.
As we walk through the ruins of Metapontum, we'll see the remains of temples dedicated to Apollo, Athena and Aphrodite, as well as the agora of Zeus and a theatre with a semicircular cavea. We'll admire the Tavole Palatine, an imposing Doric construction dedicated to the goddess Hera, of which fifteen of the original thirty-two columns remain today. This temple was also called the "School of Pythagoras" in honour of the great philosopher who taught here, as Pythagoras lived in Metapontum towards the end of his life.
Afterwards, we'll visit the National Museum to deepen our knowledge of this part of Basilicata's history. We'll also observe the main artefacts that have been found around Metapontum and in the nearby town of Pisticci.
Having spent 2 hours touring this historic place, we'll finish our private visit. You'll be able to continue exploring the Lucanian archaeological site on your own if you wish.
